Campfire Activities for Youth

After the fish have been cooked, the hot chocolate has been drunk and the s'mores have been devoured, there are plenty of things to do while sitting around a crackling campfire. Telling scary stories and singing songs are perennial favorites, but you can better engage the group with fresh ideas.
  1. Silent Shadow Movies

    • Rig up a bed sheet "screen" on one side of the fire, and make the group sit on the other side (wrapped in blankets if it's cold). Divide teens into small groups and let each of them pick the name of a popular movie out of a hat. The goal is to act out a silent version of the movie on the other side of the sheet so that only their shadows can be seen. The rest of the group has to guess which movie the group is depicting.

    Air Guitar

    • If your group doesn't want to sing around the fire, they might be up for a few rounds of air guitar. This is a game in which teams of kids lip-sync and dance to their favorite songs. After forming the groups, give teens a chance to prepare their acts. Plug in an iPod or pop a CD into a portable stereo and blast the tunes. Afterward, award honors such as Most Dangerous Dance Move and Best Boy Band.

    Silly Tournaments

    • Play simple games like thumb wrestling and rock paper scissors, but play them tournament style. First, the whole group pairs off. They play the game with their partner, best out of three. The winner moves on to the next round while his partner becomes a spectator. Continue playing rounds until only two players are left. To make this even more interesting, consider letting teens construct brackets in which they predict winners, similar to March Madness in college basketball.

    Classic Childhood Games

    • Don't be afraid to suggest quintessential elementary school games. Chances are teens will jump at the chance to channel their inner kindergartner. Telephone and Heads Up Seven Up never fail to please. Telephone is when a secret message is whispered around the circle from person to person with a hilarious end result. Heads Up Seven Up is when teens puts their heads down and thumbs up, and one player secretly puts one person's thumb down, and the victim uses his listening skills to guess who did it. Don't forget about rhythmic clapping games and chain storytelling.
