Tried and True Favorites
You can add a bit of nostalgia to your outdoor event by featuring tried and true favorite games from yesteryear. Try a good old-fashioned sack race to start off your competitions. Play "Hide and Go Seek," "Red Light-Green Light," or "Freeze-Tag." Younger guests will enjoy hearing how their parents and grandparents played these games, as they learn to play them. Older guests will enjoy recalling bygone days of their youth and sharing memories jarred by playing these games.
Outdoor Scavenger Hunts
Outdoor scavenger hunts can be tailored to tie in to the theme of your event. For example, if you are hosting a youth forestry event, have players take cameras into the wild and capture items on their lists with photographs. If your event is a school spirit picnic, plant school logos, team uniforms and other school items around the school grounds. Make a list of these and send your students on their hunt. For a family reunion, make a cryptic list that tests family knowledge. Include items such as a photograph of the oldest living relative at this reunion, the signature of the only person who lives more than 500 miles away or one piece of Uncle Joe's favorite pie on your list.
Outdoor Eating Competitions
You can officiate over an outdoor eating competition. You don't need to limit these to pie or hot dog eating events. Get silly and sloppy with a spaghetti, jello or sloppy Joe contest. If you have really brave contestants, dare them to participate in a "Fear Factor" style bug-eating event. If you are worried about safety or don't want to take it that far, use gummy worms.
Outdoor Team Sports
You can always pick teams and play an outdoor team sport to include as many people as possible. Volleyball, basketball, kickball and touch football are a few games that can be easily organized. If you have the time and energy, you can set up a crazy croquet course and choose teams to attempt conquering it.
