Space Conquest Games

Space conquest games task players with conquering the universe --- or at least a galaxy or perhaps a planet or two. These science-fiction games typically find players piloting spacecraft or controlling intergalactic soldiers, and taking on opponents in a bid for land and resources. Space conquest games have appeared across a range of formats. Some are designed for various computer systems, while others are playable straight from the box.
  1. Console Games

    • Space conquest games have appeared on many gaming consoles over the years. "Star Wars: Battlefront II" is based on the famous George Lucas movie franchise, and is available on the PSP, among other platforms. The game takes the form of a third-person shooter, with players taking on the role of Rebel or Imperial soldiers and fighting for planets on foot, in vehicles or in space. An all-out space war title, "Star Trek: Conquest" is set in the universe of the television show, but imagines a different timeline in which the Federation is at war with other races. Players travel to galaxies and try to control them, while building up fleets of ships.

    Wargames

    • This style of game involves using plastic or metal miniatures alongside a set of rules to imagine large-scale battles. "Epic Armageddon" is designed by the noted Games Workshop company and provides rules for huge struggles, involving many tiny miniatures, between humans and the brutal orks. Players use strategy and a range of troops, such as battle tanks and aircraft, to outmanoeuvre enemies and win battles. "Colonial Battlefleet" is a set of rules for running battles between spacecraft, with each player's objective being to defeat enemy fleets and control the galaxy. The game is centered on the tactics used by each player, with dice utilized to decide the outcomes of combat. Rules are provided for spaceship defences, different alien races and multiple sizes of craft.

    Board Games

    • These games are typically for multiple players. "Alien Frontiers," for instance, challenges participants with colonizing and gaining dominance over an alien planet. Each player is in charge of resource management, and must juggle this responsibility with military matters, with participants each overseeing a fleet of ships. Players take over territories and use alien technology to their advantage. "Fleets" is a strategy game, suitable for between two and six players, which revolves around utilizing a variety of spacecraft to take over star systems. This involved game makes use of a circular playing area, with participants building up their ranks of spacecraft before attacking other ships and moving about the board via worm holes.

    PC Games

    • These games are often quite complex. "Alpha Centauri," for example, was designed by the development company behind the "Railroad Tycoon" title, Firaxis, and involves colonizing an alien planet. Players research new technologies and negotiate with various factions in a bid to get ahead. The more combat-oriented "Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty" is a real-time strategy game in which players control one of multiple alien races. In single-player mode, the gamer plays as the Terrans, while a multiplayer variant is opened up online. Many missions feature unusual concepts, such as exploding suns and lava that threaten your units.
