Poor Boys Games

The video game industry is a $20+ billion dollar business that is continuing to expand its market share to more and more households. Electronic games have become so popular and widespread you could be forgiven for wondering what boys did before computer games were developed. However, this does not mean boys whose parents can't afford expensive game consoles don't have options. There are plenty of games, requiring little or no investment, that all boys, poor and rich, can enjoy.
  1. Tag Games

    • Tag games are classic playground games that only require children willing to play and some open space. There are countless variations, but the main premise is there is a team which is "it" and must catch or chase the other team. For example, Amoeba Tag is a tag game with two players on the "it" team who hold hands and must catch the rest of the players. Every player they catch links hands with them and help chase the remaining players.

    Circle Games

    • Circle games share the premise of being played by children sitting in a circle. They are also free. A popular circle game is assassin. In this game one of the boys is elected by an adult as the assassin without the rest of the kids knowing. The objective of the game is for the assassin to "kill" all the players by winking at them. If one of the players is winked at, he must wait a few seconds, so as not to give away who the assassin is, and then spread out his legs as a sign he is dead. If one of the kids thinks he knows who the assassin is, he can challenge the assassin. If he is right, the assassin loses and the game ends, but if he is wrong he dies and the game continues.

    Strength Games

    • Strength games have long been played by boys of all ages. Their main premise is to test the strength of the players in some way and, of course, the strongest or more skilled player wins. Take for instance the classic "king of the hill" game. In this game one boy is chosen as king of the hill, a mound of dirt, while the rest of the boys take turns trying to push him off it.

    Car Games

    • Car games are a necessity for families on long trips who can't afford a portable DVD player or who simply enjoy spending quality time on a family game. They are generally mental games that do not require much movement, such as the "I spy with my little eye" game and the ABC game, where players must complete the ABC with words and signs on license plates and billboards they see along the trip.

    Yo-Yo

    • The Yo-Yo is a fun low-budget game that can provide countless hours of fun. Once you learn how to do the basic throw-and-spin-back move you can try your skills at many other tricks such as the gravity pull, the sleeper and the flying saucer.
