Candy Cane Games

Candy canes feature predominantly around Christmas time, serving as holiday treats and tree decorations. While candy canes may see their peak popularity late in the year, those who love them can enjoy them all year long. Aside from snacking on candy canes, kids and adults alike can play games that feature the striped sticks in prominent roles.
  1. Card Games

    • Put a candy cane spin on the card game "Spoons." With the goal of getting four of a kind, players add cards to their hand or pass them to the immediate player on their left. With one less candy cane than the number of players in the middle of the table, the first player getting four of a kind discreetly takes a candy cane. At this point, all players grab a candy cane. The player left without a candy cane "scores" 1 point or a letter in the word "C-A-N-D-Y." Players reaching 5 points or all letters in "C-A-N-D-Y" take themselves out of the game. Remove one candy cane from the table and continue playing in this manner until one player remains.

    Classic Game Variations

    • Rather than horseshoes, try to land candy canes around a pole in "Candy Cane Horseshoes." Set up a pole and have players take turns tossing wrapped candy canes with an underarm motion. The player landing her candy cane's hook around the pole or coming closest wins the competition. Players "Pass the Candy Cane" around a circle in a variation of "Hot Potato." Play music while players pass a candy cane around a circle. After a minute, stop the music. The player holding the candy cane when the music stops takes himself out of the game. Play continues in this start-and-stop manner until one player remains.

    Online Games

    • Collect candy canes and pounce on enemies such as gift boxes, snowmen and snowball-dropping birds in "Candy Cane Crisis," accessible at sites like Armor Games. Press the "Left" and "Right" arrow keys to move and the spacebar to jump. Try to guess the correct word before all candy canes disappear in "Candy Cane Hangman," found at sites like BillyBear4Kids. One candy cane disappears for each wrong letter. Collect "good items" such as bandages, pennies and needles in "Minty: The Candy Cane Who Fell on the Ground," found at sites like Team Coco. Press the arrow keys to move and jump over items. Good items increase Minty's "Excellence Meter," while bad items such as ants, cigarettes and wads of gum decrease the meter. The game ends if Minty steps in poop.

    Relay Races

    • Players pass candy canes down a line as fast as possible in relay races. After dividing into two teams, players hold four candy canes between their fingers and pass them to the next person in line. Passing continues down the line until the candy canes reach the last person, who then passes them back to the person in front of him. Players must only use their fingers to pass the candy canes; teams dropping candy canes must restart the passing from the start of the line. The first team to send the candy canes down the line and back to the first player in line, without dropping any, wins. As a variation, players use chopsticks to pass a single candy cane down and up the line.
