Number Plate Games

Number plates are issued to licensed automobile operators, and it is illegal to drive without one. Number plates feature letters and numbers that may be randomized or specially customized. You can use number plates to create engaging and entertaining games for yourself and your passengers. Number plate games may be played on short drives or long trips.
  1. The State Game

    • Keep track of the states represented on passing vehicles' number plates, and try to find plates from all 50 states. You can keep track collectively with the help of your passengers or make the game a competition to see who can find the most states. You can keep a running record of the different number plates you see if you are on a multiple-day road trip or, alternatively, start the game over every day. Note any foreign plates to add novelty to your game.

    The Alphabet Game

    • Make a game of finding every letter of the alphabet on number plates. Progress through the alphabet in consecutive order, starting with the letter "A." You can also go backwards through the alphabet to make the game slightly more challenging. This number plate game is especially engaging for young passengers who are learning their letters or learning how to read. You can play this game as a collective effort or make it a competition to see who can find the entire alphabet first.

    Customized Plates

    • Make a game out of keeping a record of every customized number plate you see. Write down the words and significant number combinations. Discuss or try to figure out any customized plates with an immediately unclear meaning. Make it a competition among your passengers to see who can spot the most customized plates. You can also keep a tally of how many special plates you see per state or per day if you are on a long road trip.

    Mobile 21

    • This number plate game is similar to the card game 21, also called Blackjack, and it is played competitively among your passengers. Have each passenger pick a passing vehicle's number plate. Add together all of the numbers on the plate. Passengers can repeat these steps as many times as they wish, adding together all of the numbers of the plates they pick. Try to see who can get closest to the number 21 without going over. The person who reaches 21 exactly or who comes closest without exceeding it is the winner.
