Dog Games for a Toddler

Many toddlers find dogs intriguing and often play games related to the common household pets. When teaching toddlers about dogs or throwing a party for your dog-loving toddler, you can create a few dog-related games to keep the youngsters interested. Entice the toddlers to play and try their best by awarding prizes, such as dog stickers and temporary tattoos, to all game participants.
  1. Flying Disc Throw

    • Hang a large poster of a dog on a fence or tree outside. Mark a standing line and have all the toddlers line up on the line. Give each toddler a flying disc. Tell the toddlers to try to toss the flying disc to the dog on the poster. For added fun, borrow a few friendly dogs from your friends and family that enjoy chasing flying discs. The toddlers can get a kick out of watching the dogs run after the flying discs and bring them back to them to toss again.

    Dog Fetch Relay Race

    • Divide the toddlers into two teams and have them line up at a starting line. Scatter items dogs like to fetch, such as chew toys, old shoes, dog bones, a toy car and a tennis ball, all over the play area. When you say, "Fetch," the first toddler in each line must race to get a dog item and run back to his team line. Each toddler must do the same thing. The first team to finish the race wins the game. Award a small prize to each toddler for participation.

    Dog Bone Toss

    • Print a large picture of a dog with his mouth open and tape it on the bottom of a cardboard box. Cut the dog's mouth out and lean the box up against a wall. Mark a line about 3 feet from the box and have the toddlers line up. Give each toddler three small dog bones to try to toss in the dog's mouth. Another variation to this game is to use small dog biscuits (treats) instead of bones.

    Dog Drink Game

    • Fill several small, plastic bowls with water or lemonade. Spread a large tarp on the floor or play the game outside. Have the toddlers get down on their knees and hands. When you say, "Drink," tell them they must place their hands behind their back and drink the water as fast as they can like a dog. The first player to finish the drink wins the game.
