Fun Games for Ages 10 & Up

A game can brighten any day and bring the players closer together. For adolescents aged 10 and up, games like "Duck Duck Goose" and "Mother May I" may not entice them as much as when they were younger. To entertain these older children, suggest games that challenge their minds and have higher levels of competition.
  1. Shadow Scout

    • Gather all the players in a large outdoor space. Pick one player to play "It." Two other players become the shadow scouts. Have the rest of the group face away from "It" and the scouts as all three head in the opposite direction as "It" tries to find a hiding spot. After two minutes, one scout heads back to the team as the other scout stays with "It" leaving behind clues that help the group find where "It" has gone. "It" meanwhile has to try and lose the scout as he finds a hiding spot. Once the first scout returns to the group, he leads them to where he thinks "It" may be hiding, following the other scout's clues. If the group finds "It" within five minutes, they win the game.

    Message Under a Plate

    • Write down several strange phrases on separate slips of paper. Examples include "I didn't know rabbits ate carrots!" and "Astronauts on the moon? Since when?" Set some plates at a table and place a slip of paper under each plate. Have each player sit down and look at their papers. When ready, the players start a conversation. Everyone has to try and slip their phrases into the conversation without getting noticed. Players can accuse each other of using their phrases, but if they accuse incorrectly, they lose their chance at winning. The players who succeed in using their phrases win the game.

    The Mating Game

    • Pick one player to play the carnivore, while all other players get paired together to play pairs of herbivores. Each pair has to come up with a distinct sound. The carnivore stands in the middle of the play space blindfolded holding a bell. The blindfolded herbivore pairs get separated to either side of the carnivore. The herbivores sound their calls whenever they are stationary as they try to reunite with their pairs. The carnivore can move to try and tag the players, but has to sound his bell when he does. The herbivore pairs who evade the carnivore and reunite win the game.

    Knots

    • Assemble the group of at least six into a standing circle. Everyone puts their right arms into the circle, and they all grasp the arm of someone not standing to the right or left of them. After this, they all do the same with their left arms until they have formed a large knot of arms. The players have to work together to untangle their arms without letting go of each other. To add competition to the game, have groups compete against each other for the fastest time.
