How to Use a Hakkie Sak

A hakkie sak, or hacky sack, is a small footbag filled with synthetic beans. The outer covering of the sack can be made from hemp or woven or embroidered thread and the entire sack is approximately the size of a small child's fist. Playing with a hakkie sak allows you twofold benefits: it empowers you to refine your hands-free skills and it allows you to receive exercise along with cardiovascular benefits without the monotony of going to the gym. While numerous methods exist for using a hakkie sak, perfecting the most basic method is fundamental for skill building.

Instructions

    • 1

Acquaint yourself with the weight and size of the bag by throwing it up and catching it with your hands, in front of you. Practice this again by throwing it up and catching it behind your back. Continue doing this until you feel absolutely comfortable with the bag.

    • 2

Throw the bag up in the air, directing it slightly behind you. Catch it by bending your leg and scooping it backward, catching the sack in your folded up hamstring. Practice this over and over again until you can do it almost always without fail and then switch legs.

    • 3

Lift your right leg 12 inches off the floor, turning your leg out. Balance the hakkie sak on the inside of your foot. Kick your leg, directing your hakkie sak in the air toward your other leg. Drop the leg you just kicked and jump onto it, and raising what was originally your standing leg and catching the hakkie sak onto this leg. This is a trick move that happens very quickly. Practice over and over, switching legs.

    • 4

Practice kicking the hakkie sak off the outside of your foot, by lifting your right foot 12 inches off the ground and turning it inward so you expose the outside of your foot. Kick the hakkie sak off and away from you toward the feet of an imaginary partner 2 feet away. Switch feet, practicing this again.

    • 5

Practice your inside and outside kicks, but this time, instead of kicking your hakkie sak to your other foot or to an imaginary partner, kick the hakkie sak up to your own knees and back down again. Practice until you can do this nearly every time with success.
