Battle Ship War Games

Battle ship war games recreate the thrills and danger of conflict on the open seas, from eras such as World War II to present day. These games have appeared in a range of formats, from gaming consoles to board games, beginning with the original Milton Bradley "Battleship" strategy game, first published in 1967. Many battle ship war games put a twist on this original game, while others simply involve battle ship combat as a theme.
  1. PC Games

    • Battle ship games designed for the PC are often complex. "Battleship Game: World War II" is a naval strategy game that puts the player in charge of commanding warships in recreations of famous sea battles of that era, such as Bismarck and the Normandy landings. Players command a range of sea vehicles across 110 missions, and aren't limited to just one faction: players can choose between forces including the Kriegsmarine and the Royal New Zealand Navy. "Battleship" is a revamped version of the classic board game, developed by Hasbro, and features multiple game modes. The classic mode plays much like the original game, with players guessing where their opponents' ships are hidden, but with added cut-scenes, while the title also features a similar but real-time option, where players hunt other ships but without the turn-based element. The action is instead simultaneous.

    Board and Card Games

    • "Battleship" is the board game that has spawned multiple variations, and is still published in the 21st century. Two players set up plastic grids and deploy war ships hidden to their opponents; players then take turns guessing where to shoot missiles in the hope of hitting their opponents' vessels. The "Battleship Card Game" is based on "Battleship," but is more involved. The game uses illustrated fleet cards and revolves around players seeking to establish control over three or more in-game oceans. Players use task forces of war ships to block enemy movements and take down opponents' vessels.

    Console Games

    • Battle ship war games have appeared on various console gaming systems. Titles include "Naval Ops: Warship Gunner" for the PlayStation 2, a naval simulation in which players build and deploy ships, before battling it out with enemies on the world's oceans. "The Battleship," also available on PlayStation 2, is set in World War II and puts players in command of the sea vessel of the title. Players must defeat other war ships, based on real-life craft, as well as other vehicles such as fighter planes. The game features 30 missions.

    Flash Games

    • These online games are played through a user's web browser, and are typically available for free. "Battleship" is a conversion of the classic board game, with a computer visualization replacing the plastic grids of the traditional game. Players select where and how to place their ships, and then alternate turns with a computer-controlled opponent, with the first side to destroy all opposing ships the winner. "Battleship Torpedo Attack" is a very similar title to "Battleship." While the gameplay is almost identical, the playing field resembles a submarine's interior.
