Bird Counting Game
Fill a clear glass jar with plastic toy birds and pieces of candy. Plastic birds are available at many toy stores and online. Count the birds and candy when you place them in the jar and write the number down. Tell each child to guess how many birds and pieces of candy are in the jar. After all the guesses are in, announce the number to the children. The child who guessed closest to the correct number wins the jar.
Bird Catchers
Mark two corners of a large family room or backyard with signs, one that reads "Nest" and one that reads "Cage." If you do not have a large family room, play this game outside where the children have plenty of room to run. Select two children to serve as "bird catchers" and one child to play the "mother bird." The mother bird stands in the nest waiting on her baby birds, while the bird catchers stand in between the nest and cage. All other children are the baby birds and must stand in the cage. When you say, "Go," the baby birds must run from the cage to the nest. Any bird that makes it to the nest and holds onto the mother bird in the nest is safe. Anyone caught becomes the bird catcher for the next game. Keep playing until everyone has a chance to be the bird catcher and the mother bird.
Musical Birds
Print several different types of birds on card stock paper and scatter them on the floor. Write the name of each bird on the picture so children can learn the names of different types of birds. Place one less bird image on the ground than you have players. Play music and have the children flutter like birds around the room. When the music stops, each child must stand on a bird. The player not standing on a bird is out of the game. Remove one bird and keep playing. The last player standing on a bird wins the game.
Pin the Beak on the Bird
Draw, print or purchase a picture of a bird on a large poster and remove the beak, then hang it on the wall. Print or draw several beaks on card stock, cut them out and write each child's name on a beak. Place double-sided tape on the back of each beak, then blindfold each player and spin her five times. Tell her to try to pin the beak on the bird. The player who pins the beak closest to the correct spot wins.
