Word Scrabble Games

Scrabble has reigned as one of the most popular board games for decades, testing players' ability to form words in crossword style and maximize scores with high-value letter tiles and premium squares. To enhance your word-puzzle skills, engage in various Scrabble board games or play via outlets such as computer, online or video games.
  1. Board Games

    • Play Scrabble the old-fashioned way in a variety of Hasbro board games. Words must read only across or down, and you cannot use proper names, capitalized words or abbreviations. Always have seven letters ready for use when it's your turn, and have a dictionary handy to challenge opponents on words. Games end when players cannot form any new words. You win if you have the most points at the end of the game.

Aside from the classic version, Scrabble also comes in other editions. In "Scrabble Express Edition," you roll letter dice to build words. A cloth apple houses tiles in "Scrabble Apple," which features red letters that double your score. "Scrabble Upwords" lets you stack letters on top of letters already on the board, up to five tiles high. You score points not only for each letter in your word, but also for every letter tile underneath your word. While players 8 and up can play most Scrabble board games, "Scrabble Junior" caters to kids age 5 and up. In this version, players collect chips for completing words, with the player winning by having the most chips at the end of the game.

    Card Game

    • Play Scrabble at super speed in "Scrabble Slam! Card Game." With a four-letter word in front of you, race against your opponent to change the word and get rid of all of your cards. For instance, if the four-letter word is "Gate," and you have an "M" card, slap the "M" down on top of the "T" to change the word to "Game." You win the game upon getting rid of all of your cards before your opponent.

    Computer/Video Games

    • Explore new Scrabble adventures by playing computer and video games. Available for Windows and Mac systems, "Scrabble Journey" takes you around the world to places like Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Russia, as you engage in classic Scrabble game play. Aside from classic Scrabble play, "Scrabble Plus" gives you three additional game modes: "Scrabble Battle," "Scrabble Golf" and "Scrabble Wizard." For video game options, play Scrabble on the Nintendo DS or Sony PlayStation Portable platform. Titled simply "Scrabble," the release features game modes such as "Classic," "Slam" and "Speed." You also may play Scrabble via outlets such as Facebook (for which you must have an account), mobile phones, Nintendo DSi or iPads and iPods.

    Online Games

    • Play Scrabble online at the Hasbro and Pogo sites. In Hasbro's "Scrabble Online Game," drag and drop letters onto the board to form words. Form as many words and score as many points as possible before time runs out. Also at Hasbro, the "Electronic Scrabble Flash" demo game challenges you to create as many three-to-five-letter words as possible within 1 minute. The game beeps when you form a word and when the end of the minute approaches. Play classic Scrabble against a computer opponent in Pogo's "Scrabble Crossword Game." Take turns dragging letters on the board and forming words that connect to words already on the board, either across or down. When there are no possible words left to create, you win if you have more points than your opponent.
