Learning Games for Kids Below Five Years

There are a variety of games that children below the age of 5 can play that will help them to begin their learning at an early age. Young children absorb knowledge like a sponge, which means that the years during and before preschool are ideal ages for a child to begin learning things and gaining knowledge that they will be able to take with them when they enter elementary school. Incorporating methods of learning into games will allow children to get a head start on their education while they are also enjoying their playtime.
  1. Candy Land

    • Candy Land is classic children's board game that allows players to race through Candy Land using plastic pieces of various colors that are shaped like the gingerbread man. Players draw cards and then move their gingerbread man to the space on the board that matches their card. The person who reaches the candy castle first is the winner of the game. Candy Land can help children under 5 learn how to identify and become familiar with basic colors.

    Chutes and Ladders

    • Chutes and Ladders not only helps young children practice their counting when moving pawns, but it also helps to teach them about morals. The game features a series of pictures that the pawns may land on. If the picture represents a good deed, then the player may advance up the ladder. If the picture represents a bad deed, then the player must move back. A spinner is used to determine the number of moves a player is allowed.

    ABC Book

    • Children under 5 can learn their ABCs by creating an ABC book. The child may use a scrapbook or assemble pieces of paper together to create her own book. On the first page of the book, write down the letter "A" and then have the child draw a picture of something that begins with the letter shown. Have the letter written in both its capital and lowercase forms. Make a game out of the activity by having the child point out objects in the house that begin with the letter you and the child are currently working on.

    Hi-Ho Cherry-O

    • Hi-Ho Cherry-O is a game that can help young children begin learning how to count. Each player must pick cherries from their cherry tree. The game features a spinner that is used to determine the amount of cherries that the player will pick. The first player to pick all of the cherries from his cherry tree and put the cherries into his bucket is the winner of the game.
