Bow and Arrow Archery Games for Kids

Bow and arrow archery games serve a significant function for kids beyond mere entertainment; archery games also strengthen their motor skills, improve their hand-eye coordination, enhance their imagination and provide them with a medium to release energy and excitement. If your child wants to play bow and arrow games, there are multiple options from which to choose.
  1. Target Archery

    • Target archery is the game most commonly played by amateur and professional archers and is the only archery event in Olympic competitions. Using real or fake arrows, target archery entails each kid shooting several arrows at a specific target from a fixed distance. The marked line or distance that players shoot from can be arranged however the kids want, and though usually all players must shoot from the established line, younger or less-experienced kids who are playing against older archers can shoot from a different line representing a shorter distance. The object players typically shoot at is a round target with 10 concentric rings and a bulls-eye at the center. A certain number of points is awarded for hitting each specific ring, with the inner-most rings awarding the most points. After each player shoots a set number of arrows at the target, the total scores are added up and the player with the highest score wins.

    3D Archery

    • 3D archery is a game in which players shoot a three-dimensional object, such as a pinata, foam animal or burlap sacks. A benefit of 3D archery is that the game enables kids to flex their creative skills by establishing unique rules. For instance, players can choose to shoot from a wide variety of unmarked distances, select where to place the object and determine how to score the shots. Typically, scoring depends on where the arrow strikes the object, but kids can place a different scoring value on different areas of the object. For instance, kids shooting a foam animal can decide to award more points for striking the head than for hitting the legs, or they can choose to award the most points for striking the feet and less for hitting the head. Once the children establish point values for different areas of the object, each player shoots a set number of arrows at the object, and the archer with the most points wins.

    Flight Archery

    • Flight archery is one of the most simple and pure bow and arrow games for kids because it does not involve any targets. With a focus on distance, each player stands at a specific mark and shoots an arrow as far as possible. Usually players shoot one at a time; however, they can also stand side by side and shoot their arrows at the same time. To help ensure safety among kids using real arrows, the parents or supervisors must always verify that no players are positioned in front of a shooter preparing to release an arrow. After each player has shot an arrow, the archer who has shot his arrow the farthest wins.

    Cowboys and Indians

    • Cowboys and Indians is an exciting game for kids; however, they should only play using fake arrows and should always wear glasses or goggles when playing to protect their eyes from injuries. Cowboys and Indians is usually played in a yard or in the woods where there are numerous trees, slopes and ground variations. To play, the kids establish the appropriate boundaries of the game, divide the players into two teams, and the teams then run around the set area trying to shoot members of the opposing team with the toy arrows. Like dodgeball, when a player has been shot he must sit out the rest of the contest, and the team with the last player standing wins the game.
