Summer Yard Games

Summer yard games are an excellent way to get some exercise. When the weather is inviting and warm, head outside and play games in the yard with your family and neighbors. Parents should encourage children to get outdoors and play to build social skills and develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
  1. Yard Scavenger Hunt

    • Divide the players into teams and give each team a scavenger list. The scavenger lists can include items like leaves, twigs, rocks, a large blade of grass and a piece of tree bark. Each list should contain at least 25 items. When you say, "Go," the first team that can collect 20 of the 25 nature items wins the game. Adults and children can play this game. If adults are playing, make the scavenger hunt a bit more difficult by including harder-to-find items such as a black circle-shaped rock or a heart-shaped leaf.

    Sweatpants Water Relay

    • Purchase two pairs of extra-large sweatpants and divide the players into two teams. Mark a starting line and a finish line about 20 feet apart. Place a lawn chair on the finish line and give the first player in each team line a pair of sweatpants. Fill a large bucket of water and place it between the two teams on the start line. When you say, "Race," the players must dunk the sweatpants in the water. They must put them on and race around the lawn chair and back. The teammates must take the pants off and hand them to the next player in line. Each player has to dunk the pants in the water and run around the lawn chair. The first team to finish the relay wins the game.

    Timber Balancing

    • Take two 6-foot timbers (the kind you use to edge a garden) and place them in the yard. Divide the players into two teams and have each team line up at a piece of timber. The teams have to walk across the timbers without falling off. If a teammate falls off the timber, the entire team has to start over. The first team to get all of their teammates across wins the game.

    Water Balloon Catch

    • Cut the bottom off several milk jugs and place tape on the sharp edges. Give one jug to each player and have all the players scatter throughout the yard. Make several water balloons and have an adult toss the water balloons to the players. The player who can catch the most water balloons in his milk jug without popping them wins the game.
