Running Events
Use cones to set up start and finish lines for running races. Adjust the cones depending on the ages of the players. Race ideas include basic running (fastest time), skipping, running backwards, crab walk, crawl, hopping and hurdles. Create your own hurdles using foam blocks or soft stackable items to avoid anyone getting hurt.
Shot-Put Throw
Crumple up several pieces of tin foil into balls and give each player a "shot-put" to practice throwing. Players must lay the foil ball in the palm of their hand and rest it by their ear. When it is time to throw, tell the players to extend their arms out, pushing the "shot-put" as far as it will go. Record each player's distance and the player who throws it the furthest distance wins the gold prize.
Discus Throw
Create a discus throw using flying discs or have each player make her own using heavy-duty paper plates and tape. Give the players five minutes to practice throwing the flying discs. After five minutes, mark a starting line and have the players line up. Each player has three throws. Record each player's distance and the top three players win the medals.
Javelin Throw
Give the players time to make their own javelin to throw. Players can use up to five straws and tape to construct a javelin for the competition. When each player finishes, allow him at least 15 minutes to practice his throw. Have the players line up at the starting line and throw their javelin one at a time. Give each player five throws and record each distance.
Target Practice
Make a large target using sidewalk chalk or rope on the ground. Mark a point value for each ring of the target. Purchase beanbags or make your own using socks, rubber bands and dry beans or uncooked rice. Mark a standing line about 15 to 20 feet (adjust depending on ages of players) from the target. Give each player five beanbags to toss at the target. Tally up each player's score and award medals to the top three scorers.
