Things You'll Need
Instructions
Determine what type of animal the collar is to be used for. This will determine size needs and weight limitations.
Decide what you want the collar to do. Consider the environment that the collar will be used in, how long the collar will be on, what type of data, if any, you are trying to collect, the necessary transmission range and other factors.
Select and acquire materials based on the above steps. For example, if you need to be able to detect the animal from more than several miles away, you will need a stronger transmitter than if you only need to detect the animal from 500 feet. Always try to select the lightest weight and most durable materials possible, such as lithium batteries as a power source. Avoid any potentially toxic materials.
Attach the power source to the transmitter, along with any sensors you intend to use. Test the receiver and antennae. Make sure to test the transmitter before making the rest of the collar.
Attach the mold or rigging to the collar. Make sure that the mold or rigging is secure.
Attach the transmitter/power source/sensors to the mold or rigging. Make sure that the transmitter is firmly attached to the collar.
Add any environmental protections that you intend to use.
Retest the completed collar before use.
