Extreme Challenge Games for Children

Whether you're outdoors or indoors or have a large or small group, extreme challenge games can help children improve their logic, team building and communication skills. They vary in the amount of equipment and time needed, and are easy to change to make them harder or easier.
  1. Toxic Waste

    • Toxic Waste is suitable for older children and encourages them to work together to complete a task. Without good communication and involvement from all team members, it's very hard to complete. Place a bowl or bucket containing liquid or balls on the ground, with a rope laid around the object to create the "toxic" area the team can't enter. The further the circle is from the object, the harder the game. Using two pieces of rope, the team must get the object out of the toxic waste area without spilling any water or losing balls. To complete successfully the team must position people on opposite sides of the circle who are holding the ropes. Keeping them tight, they pull them both inward so they can lift out the object.

    Minefield

    • Minefield is a good game for helping to build trust and positive relationships between people. Mark out a small area (approximately 10 by 10 meters) and place "mines" in various locations in the marked out area. These can be cones, bowling pins or other soft objects that won't cause any harm if they are knocked over. Working in pairs, one person must guide the other, who is blind-folded, through the minefield. The quickest pair to complete the minefield wins. A 10-second penalty is added for every object knocked over.

    Egg Drop

    • Egg Drop is an outside game that encourages teamwork and leadership. Teams must design a parachute that can protect an egg from falling from a height. You'll need a high area (about four meters off the ground), one egg for every team, and equipment that teams can use to build egg parachutes. Equipment can include small plant pots, plastic bags, sticky tape and garden canes. It's important that teams are not told to build their parachute in a certain way, but instead work as a team to build something they feel will be the most effective. Teams have 30 minutes to design their parachutes. The teams whose eggs don't break win.

    Balloon Toss

    • Balloon Toss is a highly competitive game that is suitable for children of all ages. It involves lots of water so kids should play it outside and when the weather is good. It involves two teams of equal numbers. Each team lines up facing each other, with team members competing against a person on the other team. One team throws the water balloons to the other team at the same time. The objective is to catch the balloon so it doesn't break. Anybody who drops or breaks a balloon is out. If you successfully catch it you throw it back. The game continues until one team is entirely out.
