Kids Games to Do With Ice Cubes

On a hot summer day, kids and adults alike crave an activity that will cool them off. Playing with ice cubes is a fun and creative way to tame the heat and will keep kids busy for hours. Ice cubes are a cheap and easy alternative to installing a pool in your backyard so sit back and enjoy their games.
  1. Cold Potato

    • Cold Potato is the ice cube version of Hot Potato. All the kids sit in a circle except for one who mans the music. When the music is on, the kids pass the ice cube around the circle. The kid holding the ice cube when the music is turned off is out. The twist to this game is that the kid holding the ice cube when it melts completely is also out.

    Ice Towers

    • With a little bit of salt, kids can easily build towers out of a bunch of ice cubes. The salt melts the ice faster, so by rubbing a little bit of salt on top of an ice cube, a small amount of water will form. This is the perfect amount to stick another ice cube on top and join the two together. Kids can compete to see who can build the tallest tower. This game is best played indoors or somewhere cool so that the entire tower doesn't melt too quickly.

    Colored Ice Pictures

    • Freeze ice cubes with a toothpick sticking out of each cube. When the ice is ready, pop them out and use the toothpick as a handle. Pour thick paint, such as tempura paint, on to a piece of heavy paper and use the ice to swirl it around. The ice will begin to melt, creating cool designs on your paper.

    Ice Knock Hockey

    • This is a two player game. You need a long, clear surface such as a kitchen table and 20 small discs made out of aluminum foil. Ten pieces of aluminum foil should be lined up in a straight line across each end of the table. Players stand behind their line of foil and take turns sliding an ice cube across the table to try to knock the other player's pieces off the end of the table. The player who has knocked off the most pieces after 10 shots each is the winner.
