Fun Activities for High School Kids

High-schoolers are at a time in their life when they begin to seek independence from their parents. Many adolescents look up to and spend more time with their friends than they did when they were younger. As a result, many high-schoolers may prefer activities that can be enjoyed with their peers. Some fun activities that high-schoolers can enjoy together include starting a club, going on a scavenger hunt, playing card games and volunteering.
  1. Start a School Club

    • Many high schools offer the space and resources necessary for students to start clubs. Clubs represent a good opportunity for students to pursue their interests and hobbies with their peers in a safe environment. If a student's high school does not offer clubs, it may still be possible to start a club by proposing an idea to the principal. Some ideas for clubs include video-game clubs, book clubs, drama clubs, music clubs and martial arts clubs.

    Scavenger Hunts

    • Typical scavenger hunts take place in a specific area. However, many high-school students are at the age where they can obtain drivers licenses. Because of this, it is possible to set up scavenger hunts wherein high-school students will be required to drive around town to find all of the listed items. This encourages the use of problem-solving skills and provides driving practice. Examples of scavenger items could be a rock from a lake, a wood chip from a local park, a handout from the library or a cheeseburger from a fast food restaurant.

    Card games

    • A standard 52-card deck can be used to play hundreds of different games with others depending on personal preference. Card games are especially useful for high school students because they can be played virtually anywhere and in a short amount of time, making them perfect for lunch breaks. Simple games, such as "War," can be enjoyed without much thought, while games like "Gin Rummy" can be deeply strategic and engaging. A large listing of card games and rules can be found at Pagat.com.

    Volunteering

    • Volunteering provides excellent opportunities for high school students. Many colleges take volunteer work into consideration when deciding whom to admit. Additionally, volunteering can be a source of pride, "real-life" experience and self-confidence for high-school students. Places to volunteer include The Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, the YMCA, local nursing homes and animal shelters.
