Games for 3- to 4-Year-Old Children for Church

At the age of three or four, children's speech begins to increase and they are able to engage in more complex play. Make learning about the Bible fun for your three- and four-year-old students at church by choosing games that are interactive but simple and do not require any reading or complicated instructions.
  1. Shrinking Islands

    • Small children love music, and they love to sing and dance along. For the "shrinking islands" game, place several towels in the middle of the room, enough for all children to stand on. Play Christian kids music and teach the children the words so they can sing along. While the music is playing, the children run around the towels. When you pause the music, the kids have to run to a towel and stand on it. Children can share towels. Each time, take a towel away so that children have to squeeze tighter and tighter until not everyone fits. The last child left wins.

    Hot and Cold

    • Hide several short, simple Bible memory verses on bright pieces of paper around the room and tell children to search for them, calling out "hot," "cold," warm" or "freezing" to direct them. When the children find one, stop the game and read the verse aloud a few times, until the children are able to repeat after you. Once the verse is memorized, children can look for the next one.

    Bible Story Match-Up

    • This game requires Sunday-school teachers to draw or print out two copies of pictures of scenes from Bible stories learned in class. For example, you could find a picture of David facing Goliath with his sling, Daniel in the lion's den or Joseph with his multi-colored coat. The pictures should be large, brightly-colored and easy to identify. Spread out the pictures on the floor facedown in a grid. Children take turns turning over two pictures at a time, trying to find a match. Once a match is found, the child can remove it and keep it for the remainder of the game. At the end, the child with the most matches wins.

    Pinata

    • Buy or make a piñata, but instead of filling it with only candy, attach simple Bible verses to the candy that the children can bring home and memorize with their parents. Let each child take a turn hitting the piñata until it breaks. Then, give each child a bag to fill up with candy and verses.
