Skipping in Classic Running Games
Most kids are familiar with games such as "Red Light, Green Light," "Tag," "Duck, Duck, Goose" and others like them. If you are with a group of children, you can ask them if they know any running, chasing or circle games. They will probably provide you with some more ideas. As a variation on any of these games, require the children to skip instead of run. They will have a hard time avoiding laughter as they stumble trying to skip as quickly as possible.
Skipping Kickball
This variation on these outdoor games works best with older children who understand how to play this team game. Have two teams go head-to-head in this park favorite, but instead of running around the bases or running to field the ball, players must skip. This slows the game down quite a bit and adds some silliness, not to mention a different degree of difficulty.
Skipping Races
Create an obstacle course, a relay race, a head-to-head race or some sort of combination. Competitors must skip in part or all of the race. If they fail to skip and run instead, they incur a penalty such as starting over or some other delay. Use cones or natural markers such as field lines or trees to determine where the races start and end. For added difficulty, make participants spin in circles before they skip.
Skipping Rope
Kids can skip while holding their own rope or while two friends turn a long rope or two. Make the game competitive by counting number of skips, timing how long a child can jump before making a mistake or by using playground rhymes.
