Get to Know You Games for Children and Youth

Icebreaker games or "get to know you" games can help a large group of children learn interesting facts about each other and will help them learn each other's names. After playing these games, children will feel more comfortable with each other and will likely make friends with those who have similar interests.
  1. 15 Seconds

    • The "15 Seconds" game is a fast-paced game that allows children to answer a variety of questions about themselves. Have the children sit in a circle and pick a question for one of the kids to answer. The child will have 15 seconds to answer the question, and everyone else should remain quiet. Move around the circle so everyone has a chance to answer the question in the allotted time. A variation includes having a child who just answered a question ask the person beside her a new question that the second child must answer in 15 seconds.

    Two Truths and a Lie

    • In this game, students sit in a circle. The children must take turns telling two truths about themselves and one lie. The rest of the students take a vote (by raising their hands) to figure out which statements they think are true and which statements are false. This is a good game for getting to know quirky and interesting facts about each other.

    Autograph List

    • With this game, children should each be given a sheet with the list of all the other children's names. They must go to each of the other kids and find out who they are, and have the other children sign their autographs below their names on the list. Students should be given a time limit in which they should be able to get all the autographs. This game makes sure each child talks to everyone in order to get their autograph.

    Name Game

    • The name game tests the memory of each child and is a good game for children on the first day of school. Have the children sit in a circle. The first child says her name. The next child will say his name and the name of the person before him. Each child will have to remember more and more names. When you reach the first child again, have her try to say the names of all the other kids.
