Team Games to Play at Work

Work doesn't have to be all about deadlines and numbers. It also can be about playing games that teach you how to work better with your colleagues and succeed as a team. When learning is entertaining and teaching strategies are varied, difficult concepts in the workplace can be easier to grasp.
  1. Days Of The Week Color Association

    • As a team, find out how easy it is for different perspectives to exist among team members. Ask each person to associate a color with each day of the week. Read off the days of the week and each team member reads his answers. Ask one person who gives the most popular answer to provide his explanation, and then choose a second person who gave that answer to provide his reasoning. This will help your team start to see that there are not always black and white answers, even if black or white is one of the answers given.

    Fun Facts

    • Find out information about the members on your team. Have each member of the team write down three facts about her that she thinks her teammates might not know. Choose a team leader to collect these facts and read them out loud, while the rest of the team writes down a guess as to who provided the fact. Reveal the answers after each person has written down her guess, awarding one point to each person with the correct guess. The team member with the most points is the winner. Your team will learn that people might not always fit the picture you have of them, and you should not judge coworkers or customers based on perception.

    Company Trivia Contest

    • Divide your employees into teams. These can be teams of individuals who work together regularly, or you can mix it up with each team having a person from several departments. Give each team the same list of questions about the company. Questions could be about the history of the company, recent accomplishments by the company and corporate executives within the company. Each team works together to provide a written list of answers, with the team providing the most correct answers winning. The trivia contest gives your teams a way to compete while learning things about the company they might have forgotten, or never been taught during training.

    Island Survival

    • Divide the employees into teams and have them work together to choose five items to bring with them if they were to be stranded on a deserted island. Provide the teams with a list of 20-30 items to choose from. Direct the teams to come to an agreement among their members as to which items should be chosen, and not just have five members choose one item each. Each team must then present its logic to the group as to why it chose the five items. This will help the team members learn that sometimes even if you believe your answer is the best, working as a team can be more efficient and foster better work relations.
