Activities for Drama in the Classroom

Allowing students to express themselves in the classroom can help them come out of their shells and learn more about their peers. Drama activities can get shy kids to develop more confidence with others. But before you start planning monologues and improvisational routines, try some warm-up drama activities in class.
  1. Mirror Mimics

    • Divide the group into pairs and have each pair face each other so they stand about one foot apart. Pair up students who don't know each other that well. When you tell them to start, the pairs have to mimic each other as if they are both looking at a mirror of themselves. So if someone moves his right arm up and down, his partner must do the same.

    Simple Piece of Fabric

    • Find a piece of fabric. Gather students into a large standing circle. Hand one of the students the piece of fabric and tell him he has to use the fabric as if it's something besides what it is. For example, the player can act like he's blowing his nose with the fabric, making it a handkerchief; or, the player can pull it over his shoulders so it becomes a cape. The fabric gets passed around the circle until everyone has come up with a unique use for it.

    Up Close and Personal

    • Pair up the students and sit them down to face each other. When you say "go," the pairs must stare at each other for as long as possible without laughing or making a sound. If anyone in any pair laughs, that pair is disqualified and you can switch the players around to form new pairs. Continue with as many rounds as possible to determine the two most focused actors.

    Popcorn

    • Gather your group into a large open space. Call out a number and an animate or inanimate object -- use anything from a washing machine to a bird. The players have to break into groups of the number you called out and then work together to figure out how to represent the object using just their collective bodies and limbs.
