Fun Afternoon Games

The afternoon is a good time to get outside, enjoy the warmth and get some exercise. As such, playing games in the afternoon can be a fun way to pass the time with friends and family. Afternoon games can involve a little physical activity or a lot, depending on the game and the players involved. Consider flag football, capture the flag, horse basketball, or a three-legged race as some games to play in the afternoon.
  1. Flag Football

    • If you have a group of 12 or more, find a large field on which to play flag football. Flag football is similar to standard American football, but differs from in that players must wear flags that are pulled from the player's waist in lieu of being tackled or touched. The offensive team must attempt to make a touchdown--a play where a team member receives or runs the ball into the end zone. The defensive team must attempt to stop the offensive team from scoring.

    Capture the Flag

    • Capture the flag requires 10 or more players (the more the better) that are divided into two teams. Players divide the playing area in half, with each team reigning over one side. Each team must guard a flag that they place at a location on their territory. Team members may move freely on their own territory, but may be captured if they venture into the other side's territory. Players must decide what constitutes a "capture"--it can be a tag or grasp by the opposing team. If a player captures the opposing team's flag, he must carry it safely to his team's side without being stopped.

    Horse

    • Two or more two players can play horse, a game that requires accurate basketball shooting skills. The object of the game is to avoid spelling the word "Horse," as the letters of the word are assigned if a player misses a shot. The first shooter must call the shot he is attempting to make. For example, he may shout "three-point shot" if he's trying to shoot from the three-point line. If the shooter fails to make the shot, the next player can attempt to make the same shot. If he does, then the first player receives the letter "H." If both players make a shot, then neither receives a letter. The game continues until one player spells out "Horse"--that player loses.

    Three-legged Race

    • A three-legged race is a competition in which teams of two attempt to cross the finish line first. The trick is that each pair of players must tie their inside legs to her teammate's. making a race quite challenging. Three-legged races should be held on grass, as teams often fall by tripping over each other's legs. You can hold a three-legged race with as few as four people, though more will make the competition more interesting.
