Ten Commandment Games for Children

The Ten Commandments, more formally known as the Decalogue, are the set of moral laws given by God to dictate the behavior of man. Appearing three times in the Old Testament of the Bible, the Ten Commandments are held in the highest esteem by followers of Islam, Judaism and Christianity, and there are several fun, interactive games that will help children better understand the Decalogue and its role in the Bible.
  1. Commandment Mix-Up

    • In this simple children's Bible game, players try to correctly arrange the Ten Commandments in the order that God related them to Moses before their opponents. Print out a list of the Decalogue for each player, go over the Ten Commandments and have them cut them apart, place them face-down and mix them up. When the game begins, have players flip over their 10 strips of paper and arrange them. Once everyone is complete, go over the correct order of the Ten Commandments as a group and discuss the meaning behind each one. The winner is the child who put the Ten Commandments in order in the least amount of time.

    Ten Commandments Dice Game

    • This dice game is meant to be played by children in teams or as individual players, and the object is to be the first to earn a compete set of the Ten Commandments. To begin you will need two large die, index cards and a master sheet showing the correct saying and order of the Ten Commandments. Write each commandment on one side of index cards and its corresponding number on the opposite side, then place them in numerical order in front of the players. Teams or players take turns throwing the dice, and whatever number is thrown is the commandment the player must correctly recite to receive the card. If an 11 is thrown, it represents Commandment No.1, and a "double sixes" combination is considered wild, and players may choose any commandment they have not already won for their collections. Any other "doubles" thrown offer players an extra turn, and the first to collect all Ten Commandments is the game winner.

    Complete that Commandment

    • This children's game can be played individually or in teams. This game helps little ones learn the Ten Commandments verbatim. Before the game begins, the moderator, perhaps a parent or Bible school teacher, will decide which words will be omitted from each commandment. He or she will then read the commandment aloud, except of course for the word that players are supposed to supply. This Ten Commandments game can be modified for several rounds of play, either by having more than one word from each commandment omitted -- or calling them out of order and having players determine which commandment is being called out.

    Climb Up Mount Sinai

    • This game will help children better understand the story of how God told Moses to climb to the summit of Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments. First, mark off a large triangle, about 25 feet long and 10 feet across, with either chalk, tape or rope, divide it into two vertical halves and place two "tablets" at the top to represent the stone slabs Moses collected. Divide players into two teams, line them up at the bottom of your "Mount Sinai" and have each player decide how they will "climb" the mountain, such as hopping or crab walking. The game begins as one player from each team "climbs the mountain" to retrieve one tablet, only to climb back to hand off the tablet to the next player on her team, who will climb the mountain to replace the tablet for the next player to retrieve. Play continues in this way until all players have climbed up and down the mountain, and the first team to have all participants climb Mount Sinai and retrieve its tablet is the winner.
