Physical War Games
There are a variety of sports and physical games that fall under the heading of war games, including paint ball, in which compressed air guns fire small, paint-filled projectiles, and air soft, a sport similar to paint ball, though the projectiles are much smaller and not as messy. Both of these are used for training purposes for both military and police in various parts of the world.
Miniatures Games
Games like Warhammer 40,000 or Axis and Allies are played on physical maps with miniature pieces to show their strategies. These games tend to be single battles with roughly equal armies facing each other across terrain according to rules for how this terrain works. Dice often are used to determine successes when the miniature forces clash.
First-Person Shooters
The first-person shooters genre is ideal for war-zone games. Counter Strike, the Call of Duty series and numerous other games not only put you into the head of a soldier in a combat zone, but these games will put you in actual wars and in actual scenarios where you need to achieve an objective from the beaches of Normandy in World War II to black ops in modern-day Iran.
Real-Time Strategy
A war-zone game common to PCs is the real-time strategy game. These games set you up as the all-seeing commander who builds units, leads strikes and attempts to conquer the foes on your map. Age of Empires, Command and Conquer and Starcraft are all classic real-time strategy games that fall under the the domain of war-zone games.
