How to Win at the Crane Game

Crane games, also referred to as claw machines, can be addictive fun. The object is to maneuver a three- or four-pronged claw over a sea of prizes. If you're lucky, the claw will grab a prize from the pile and drop it through the dispenser chute. Before you put in your first dollar, understand that crane games require both skill and luck. Most machines have a mechanism that controls the strength of the claw. Some machines will grab prizes easier, while other cranes are so weak, they rarely grab toys.

  Survey the layout of the toys. Locate one or two items that look attainable. The best prizes will be lying on their sides on top of the pile. Try to avoid prizes that are even slightly covered by other prizes.

  Insert your money, after you have located your target.

  Line up the crane using the machine's controls. Spend the majority of your time getting into the correct position. If you have a friend with you, have him or her stand along the side of the machine to help you hit your target. For stuffed animals, try to line up the claw so it grabs the animal around the chest.

  Hit the drop button to release the crane.

  Repeat this process if you moved the animal significantly, but dropped it. Pick another target if your previous target seems unattainable.
