How to Preserve Pinball Backglass

Classic pinball games offer an alternative to electronic video games. The action of the flippers, the banging of the bumpers, the flashing lights and period art on the backglass are all important elements of the pinball experience. Some pinball enthusiasts collect pinball backglasses as art; others want to preserve the backglass in a working machine. Preserving your pinball backglass is easy to do and will prevent delamination and flaking of the paint, keeping the vivid design intact for years to come.

Things You'll Need

  • Clear glaze spray
  • Clear plastic wrap (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the painted side of the pinball backglass with a paper towel dampened with glass cleaner. If the paint on your backglass is delaminated, peeling or flaking, skip this step.

    • 2

Mask any score reel windows in the backglass with painter's tape.

    • 3

Place the backglass flat on a level surface, painted side up. Spray the first of three coats of thick, clear glaze spray, keeping the spray can about 18 inches away from the glass and moving the spray can quickly from side to side. Apply two more coats, letting each coat dry for at least 30 minutes.

    • 4

Remove the painter's tape from the score reel windows.
