Things You'll Need
Instructions
Familiarize yourself with the character cards. There are eight character cards. The possible characters are: Assassin, King, Bishop, Merchant, Architect, Thief, Magician, and Warlord. The Assassin can choose one character to assassinate. The King can tax noble districts. The Bishop can tax religious districts and is the only character immune to the Warlord. The Merchant receives an extra gold coin at the beginning of each turn. They can also tax trade districts. The Architect can build two additional districts per turn. The Thief can steal another player's gold. The Warlord can destroy one district card in any player's city by paying one gold less than the cost of the card. They can also tax military districts.
Familiarize yourself with the district cards. There are 80 district cards. Each card features a building that you can add to your city. Each building has a cost that is represented by a series of gold coins on the left side of the card. Each card has a colored dot on the bottom that represents what type of district it is. Yellow is a noble district, blue is a religious district, green a trade district, and red a military district. A purple dot has special benefits which are detailed on the card.
Appoint the king. In the first round, the oldest player is the king and he places the king marker in front of him.
Distribute cards and coins. Each player takes four district cards and two gold coins.
Draft characters. The king takes the character deck and places one card at random face down on the table. If you are playing with five players or less, he also places one card face up on the table. The king then looks at the remaining cards in the deck and chooses one for himself before passing the deck to the left. The next player will choose one card and then pass the deck to his left until every player has chosen a character.
Take your turns. The king calls out: "who has number one?" Each character card has a number on it. Number one is the Assassin. The player with this card takes his turn. He can use his ability, which is described on his character card, draw two district cards and choose one to add to his deck or draw two gold coins. He can also build buildings by spending their gold. Once this player is done with his turn, the King calls for player number two to reveal himself, and that player takes his turn. This continues until everyone has played.
Re-draft your characters. Once every player has taken his turn for that round, the character cards are turned in and shuffled. The player who chose the King card in the previous round will choose his character card for that round and pass to the left to get things going again.
Conclude the game. The game ends when one player has built eight buildings. Count the value of your buildings and add completion bonuses and the player with the highest score wins.
