How to Make a Portable Horseshoe Pit

Playing horseshoes is a fun, outdoor activity, and an important aspect to some family times, bar-b-ques or parties. Horseshoe pits consist of two square pits of sand with a metal bar or stake in the middle of it, so players can throw a "ringer" from each side. However, the problem with horseshoe pits is that they take up a lot of room in a yard, and sometimes don't fit in smaller yards. Creating a portable horseshoe pit alleviates these problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut each 8-by-1-by-2 board into four equal-sized wooden pieces. Sand each section with sandpaper and stain these pieces of wood so they look attractive and are comfortable to carry from place to place.

    • 2

Create two squares with these eight equally-cut wooden boards you have created. Attach each corner with wood screws and a drill. You have now built the basic frames for the horseshoe pits. Install small steel brackets in each corner of these wooden squares for added support on the horseshoe boards, as the weight of an iron horseshoe being thrown against and over them may tear them apart.

    • 3

Find two metal stakes that can easily be inserted into the ground in the middle of each square. Place each square the proper distance apart. Drive your metal stakes upright in the middle of each square, and you are ready to play a horseshoe match.
