How to Make a Treasure Hunt Using String

It is difficult to imagine that there is anyone living who hasn't dreamed of finding lost treasure at some point in his or her life. Many Hollywood blockbusters focus their action on the hunt for buried treasure, great works of literature center their plots on searching for treasure, and uncountable childhood games adopt treasure-hunting heroes as the major actors of their stories. Given the prevalence of treasure hunting in modern society, it's an obvious choice for a party game, and a great treasure hunt can be achieved with a small bounty, a little creativity and some string.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that you have as many different colors of string or yarn as there are participants involved in the treasure hunt. When the hunt begins, each treasure hunter will be following his or her own color.

    • 2

Attach a "treasure" --- one of the prizes --- to the end of one of the strings by tying a knot around the prize. Then set the prize down in its ultimate hiding place --- under a chair or behind a bookshelf, for example, if the hunt is indoors, or behind a tree or rock if the hunt is outdoors.

    • 3

Being sure not to disturb the treasure in its hiding spot, take the string to which it is attached and begin to wrap it around obstacles such as a chair or a banister or a coat rack for example. Once that string has been wrapped and redirected for approximately 25 feet, cut the string.

    • 4

Mark the cut end of the string with a piece of paper that says "Start Here." Repeat Steps 2 and 3 with the other strings.
