Directions for Mahjongg Solitaire

The computer game Mahjong solitaire combines elements of the popular tile and card games. The layout consists of 144 tiles, all with symbols on them. Your goal is to remove all the tiles, which are stacked on top of each other, by matching two identical tiles. As you remove these tiles, more of the game pieces are revealed, much like the card game solitaire. You must use strategy to determine which pairs to remove so that more tiles are put into play.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any pairs of tiles that are identical and not covered or partially covered by other tiles.

    • 2

Eliminate seasonal or flower tiles first. These tiles can be considered as "wild" because you can remove a "summer" tile if you can match it with a "spring" tile, for example. This rule only applies to these two types of tiles.

    • 3

Eliminate tiles that will reveal the most possible tiles beneath them. Don't remove the bottom tiles in a column, for example, when you could get rid of one that has more tiles beneath it.

    • 4

Know that each tile is duplicated four times on the board, giving you two possible matches during the game (not counting the wild tiles). If you have three free matching tiles, match and remove the two that give you the most options for removing future tiles, knowing you will be able to match the third tile later.

    • 5

Score points for each tile removed from the board. The value of the tile pair is multiplied by the number of tiles remaining on the board, with characters counting one point, circles two points, bamboos three points, winds four points, dragons five points, flowers six points and seasons seven points. Each game begins with 72 pairs, so if you removed a bamboo first you would receive 216 points (or 72 x 3.) If you do not clear all of the tiles, you earn points based on which pairs you removed.
