How to Make Your Own Match Word Game

A matching word game is a visual activity that promotes learning in a fun way. It is often used to recap a lesson. You can make your own matching word game on paper or on the computer. To improve memory, allow players to flip a card with a word on the underside and guess where its match is located. If you're recapping a lesson, you can have players match descriptions to words you've hidden in another column.

Instructions

  1. Match Descriptions to Words

    • 1

Draw or create a grid with two rows and two columns on a blank page.

    • 2

Type or write "Description" in the first row of the first column.

    • 3

Type or write "Word" in the first row of the second column.

    • 4

Go to the second row of the first column. Write or type the clues for each word on separate lines, so each is directly below the previous clue.

    • 5

Go to the second row of the second column. Write or type the matching words in random order and on separate lines, so each is directly below the previous word.

    • 6

Add instructions for the game to the top of your page, such as: "Match each word with the correct description" or "Draw a line to connect the matching word to its description."

    Match Words for Memory

    • 7

Create or draw a grid of any size on a blank page. Write or type a word into a random cell on the grid.

    • 8

Rewrite or type the same word into another random cell, so it appears twice.

    • 9

Write the next word for the word match in a new cell and rewrite the word in a random cell. Repeat this step until you've added all the matching words you need.

    • 10

Print out the grid (if created on a computer).

    • 11

Cut out the words, using the lines on the grid as a guide. To play the game, flip the words over and shuffle them on a flat surface, such as a table or the floor. Take turns turning over words and attempting to match pairs. Remove the matched pairs into separate piles for each player. The person who matches the most pairs is the winner.
