Rules of a Scratch in Eight Ball

The game of eight-ball pool includes a cue ball and object balls. The cue ball is used to hit the object balls into the pocket. A "scratch" occurs when the cue ball itself is pocketed or if the shooter fails to hit the object ball with the cue ball completely. Since a scratch can occur in many circumstances, there is a specific set of rules to help govern the results for players.
  1. If the Cue Ball is Pocketed

    • If the cue ball is pocketed on any shot, no matter how many object balls are pocketed along with it, the result is a loss of turn with the opposing player being given "ball in hand." A ball-in-hand shot means the ball can be placed anywhere behind the pool tables' head string, which is an imaginary line running horizontally across from the opposing second diamonds on each side of the table. A ball-in-hand shot is always taken from the breaking side of the table.

If the Object Ball is Missed Completely

    • If an object ball is missed completely by the cue ball, the result is a loss of turn with the opposing player being given a ball-in-hand shot.

If the Cue Ball is Pocketed on the Final 8-ball Shot

    • If the cue ball is pocketed along with the 8-ball on the final shot, the result is an immediate loss of game for the player. If the cue ball is pocketed and the 8-ball is not either pocketed or jumped from the table, the result is a loss of turn with the opposing player being given a ball-in-hand shot. If the player completely misses the 8-ball with the cue ball, the result is also a loss of turn with the opposing player being given a ball-in-hand shot.

If the Cue Ball is Pocketed on a Break

    • If the cue ball is pocketed on a break shot, the result is the opposing player being given a ball-in-hand shot, but he must not shoot any object ball behind the head string. All balls pocketed during the break are to remain pocketed (except for the 8-ball, in which case the new shooter can either ask for a re-rack or just have the 8-ball spotted and continue playing).
