Many websites offer opportunities for users to compete for cash prizes. Most are competitions of skill; however, some are competitions of luck. Before entering an online competition, do your research to make sure the website is legitimate.

Writing Competitions
- "Firstwriter" is a website that lists dozens of free writing competitions for poetry, fiction, nonfiction and scripts. They have an easy-to-use search box to find exactly what you are looking for, an RSS feed to stay informed about new competitions and an "InstantAlert" service that sends users an email each time a new competition is available. New competitions are added daily, and old ones are removed.
Gaming Competitions
- "Gamersaloon" is a website that allows gamers to compete for cash prizes in two-player or multiplayer tournaments or clan matches. Competitors must be at least 18 or older and may not reside in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Iowa, Maryland, North Dakota, Tennessee or Vermont, as online gaming competitions for money are illegal in those states.
Poker Competitions
- "PokerStars" claims to have more online poker tournaments and games than any other website. Players can compete for money in the following games: Texas Hold'em, Omaha Poker, Omaha-8, Seven Card Stud, Seven Card Stud High/Low, Razz, HORSE, 5-Card Draw and 2-7 Triple Draw.
Contests and Sweepstakes
- Websites such as "Grandma Jam," Lots of Luck" and "Online Sweepstakes" list hundreds of contests and sweepstakes that are free to join. In addition to cash prizes, contestants can win products, services and vacations.
