What Are Remote Associations?

A remote association is a type of word association test. It was developed in 1962 by S.A. Mednick as part of a creativity study. It is useful in this regard because it doesn't require field-specific knowledge of any kind.
  1. RAT

    • A remote association test, also known as a RAT, is a word association test that presents three seemingly unrelated words and asks the person being tested to identify the single concept that connects them.

    Function

    • The function of a remote association test is to determine a person's aptitude for creative thought. At least two studies have shown a connection between high RAT scores and a high level of creativity and originality.

    Example

    • The words used in a remote association test must be connected by a single concept while at the same time appearing unconnected. For example: the words "playing," "credit" and "report" appear unrelated. However, they all relate to the word "card."
