Fruits of the Spirit Activity Ideas

In Galatians, Chaper 5, verses 22 and 23 of the Bible, it describes "fruit of the Spirit" as nine visible attributes. These attributes are peace, long-suffering, joy, love, meekness, faith, goodness, temperance and gentleness. Whether you are planning lessons including all the attributes or concentrating on one attribute at a time, many fun activities can help children understand and learn about the fruits of the Spirit.
  1. Scratch-and-Sniff Fruit Painting

    • To make a scratch-and-sniff fruit painting, you will need large manila construction paper, markers, paint brushes, water and flavored drink packages. Let the children draw several fruits on the manila paper, such as grapes, lemons, cherries and strawberries. Mix each flavored drink package with a cup of water and let the children paint the fruits with the corresponding smell. For example, the children will paint the grapes with the grape-flavored drink mix. After the paper dries, let the children scratch and sniff the fruits.

    Fruit Sugar Cookies

    • Roll out a large pan of sugar cookie dough and use fruit-shaped cookie cutters to shape the cookies. Bake the cookies and allow time for them to cool. Make different colors of icing using food coloring. Let the children ice the fruit cookies with the corresponding icing colors, such as red for apples red and yellow for bananas. The children can then eat some of the cookies and then bag the rest to give away as gifts to reward acts of kindness.

Fruit of the Spirit Matching Game

    • Make several cards, each with a picture of a fruit. On the other side of the card, write one of the nine attributes. For example, two cards have a picture of a lemon on one side and have "love" written on the opposite side; two more cards will have pictures of oranges on one side with "joy" written on the opposite side, and so forth. Place all the cards face down and let the children play a matching game. Award a piece of fruit to every child who finds a match.

    Beanbag Fruit Toss

    • Sew together colored pouches of felt to make fruit beanbags, such as an apple, cherries or grapes. Fill the bags with beans and stitch the sides together of each one. Have all children sit in a circle and hand one child a beanbag. That child will toss the beanbag to another player in the circle and when he catches it, he must yell out one of the nine attributes. If he gets it correct, he can toss the beanbag to another player and he is still in the game. If he gets it wrong, he is out of the game. Keep playing until only one player remains. Use two or three beanbags at a time if you have a large group.
