First Grade Math Games to Make

Many games involve counting spaces, adding or comparing numbers, identifying shapes or counting money. This makes games ideal for reinforcing and teaching first-graders math.
  1. Mixed Tic-Tac-Toe

    • Create a tic-tac-toe board with addition or subtraction problems in each box. Students take turns solving problems in the square they want. If they solve the problem incorrectly, they may not have the space.

    Moving and Solving

    • Print a blank board game or draw one that has spaces extending from a starting point to a final destination. Create a spinner with addition and subtraction signs. A player spins to determine whether he selects an addition or subtraction problem, solves the problem, and then moves a paper marker to the next space if his answer is correct.

    Math Coloring Fun

    • Draw or print a picture. Divide it into small sections and write numbers 1 through 10 in each section. Create math problem cards that when solved equal numbers 1 through 10. Students should color each corresponding number a designated color when they solve the problem.
