Field Day Activities for Winter

Schools often plan field days to get students out of the classroom and onto the field for a day of physical activity and competition. For winter field days, you may want to center your activities around a winter theme as well as your environment, especially if you have snow available to you.
  1. Winter Dress-Up Relay

    • Get the students completely bundled up in this fast-paced relay field game. Prepare for the game by gathering two of every type of winter clothing item you pick out. You want about five types of winter clothing. For instance, gather two sweaters, two scarves, two hats, two coats and two pairs of mittens. When ready to play, divide the players into two teams. Line the teams up at one side of the field and place a pile of clothing in front of either team. When you say "Go," the first players quickly put on the clothing items and race to the other side of the field and back again. They then hand the clothing to the next players in line, who do the same. The first team to have all their teammates back in line wins the game.

    Snowball Fight

    • Arrange for students who do not get to experience snow at home to indulge in a snowball fight with this activity. Begin by dividing the students into two teams. Each team takes to one side of the play area, with a line in the center separating teams. Hand every player one polystyrene white foam ball. When you say "Go," the players all throw their snowballs to the enemy's side. The players continue to throw the balls that land on their side back over to the enemy. When one minute passes, instruct the players to stop throwing the snowballs. Determine the winning team by counting how many snowballs each team has on their side of the field. The team with the least amount of snowballs wins the game. Continue playing for as many rounds as you like.

    Snow Target

    • Play this recreational game if you have snow outside. Start by making a target on the ground using colored water in a squeeze bottle. Squirt the water out and create three large circles onto the snow with each circle inside the other to create a bull's eye. Then, have the students line up behind a starting point about five feet from the target. Each of the kids takes a turn at throwing a snowball toward the target, trying to land closest to the center of the innermost circle. Eliminate any of the players who don't land their snowballs inside that spot. Keep rotating the players who make it inside the target, moving the starting point back a foot every round. The last player standing wins the competition.
