Spotting a fake, or knockoff, memory stick can prevent you from wasting your money on something that is not genuine. Memory sticks are generally used as a storage device on portable devices such as cameras and games. They are convenient to use and cost effective. Memory sticks can save money by copying files and images to a computer and reusing the memory stick. Unfortunately, there are various fake ones on the market. Learn how to spot a fake memory stick with these tips.

Look at the part numbers on the memory stick to determine if it is fake. Fake memory stick part numbers may have an extra "T." For example, the part number "MSX-M4GS/X" is the original number and "MSX-M4GST/X" is the fake number.

Look at the memory capacity logo on the memory stick. Although fake memory sticks have similar colors, if you look closely you can see that the fake one is slightly different.

    • 3

Check the hologram sticker when trying to determine if a memory stick is fake. Service centers have a way of checking if the hologram sticker is fake through lenses. When the sticker is genuine they can be seen as black in the left lens and normal in the right. If the sticker is fake it is seen as normal in both lenses.

Rub your fingers over the lettering on the memory stick. If the letters rub off when you touch them that indicates that the memory stick is not genuine.
