Hints for the I Spy Game

Scholastic's "I Spy" books, videos and interactive games have won many distinguished awards over the years. 2001's "I Spy Treasure Hunt" was called "intricate and ingenious" by "Booklist," and received the Parent's Choice Award.
  1. The Rhymes

    • Read the rhymes through a couple of times without paying attention to the picture. This creates less confusion. The rhymes provide hidden clues to search for within the puzzle. Reading the rhyme by itself can help some tricky phrases stand out as possible clues.

    Seek in Sections

    • Separate the puzzles into sections. Draw an imaginary cross in the middle of the picture and separate it into four squares. Search the puzzle one square at a time. Turn a book to the side and even upside down as you scan the square. Sometimes objects are upside down and easier to find by rotating the book. Seek section by section.

    One Clue at a Time

    • Search for one clue at at time. By discovering the location of that first clue, you then can more easily find the second. The first couple of clues can give the seeker a feel for that particular puzzle's object hiding method. Begin at the top of the hidden object clue list and work your way down, one clue at a time.

    Final Advice

    • When you just can't find one particular clue, walk away and leave it. Rest your eyes and relax. It is possible that the "I Spy" contagion has occurred. Go back to the game and write down the rhyme that you are stuck on. Read it out loud. Don't read it out of the book or off of the game, but off of the paper you wrote it on, in your own handwriting. Read it to a friend as you nibble a chocolate chip cookie. It will come to you the next time you go back to the game and find the object, front and center. It will be the main object you overlooked a hundred times.
