How to Guess Clues

Guessing clues is a necessary and critical element in a variety of games such as scavenger hunts, charades and mystery games. Clues vary on skill level based on how much information is given in the clue itself. Games with a theme, such as a pirate murder mystery game, for example, will typically be easier because you start the guessing with a frame of reference. The greater the number of players attempting to guess the game, the greater the advantage due to the higher number of ideas being contributed.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the clue slowly and carefully; rushing through it thoughtlessly can lead to misinterpretation.

    • 2

Read the clue aloud to further clarify it for yourself.

    • 3

List obvious answers first. This rules out simple options and clears your head, allowing you to focus more intently on the clue, if necessary.

    • 4

Read between the lines. Evaluate to see if there could be hidden meanings in the clue. Review the obvious answers you listed previously and consider possible synonyms for these words. Cross-reference a thesaurus for additional help.

    • 5

Evaluate possible sarcasm, irony or double meaning in the words of the clue that could lead to an answer.

    • 6

Brainstorm with a group to incorporate other interpretations of the clue.
