Contest Rules for Balloon Relay Races

Relay games typically involve either partners or teams working together to accomplish a task before the other teams. With a balloon relay, the team members follow the particular rules of the game to cross the finish line without dropping the balloon or having it touch the floor.
  1. Fork Pass

    • In a fork pass balloon relay, participants break into teams of two. Mark the ground with masking tape to indicate the starting line, midway point and finish line. One player positions himself at the starting line, with his partner at the middle line. A basket waits at the finish line. Set a pre-determined time frame for the game (such as five minutes) and scatter at least 10 balloons behind the starting line. On go, the player on the starting line must pick up a balloon using only two forks and carry it to his partner. The balloon cannot touch any part of his body during the process. Only the forks may contact the balloon. If a balloon pops, the player must return to the starting line and pick up another with the forks. If a balloon falls, he can try to catch it with the forks before it hits the ground; if it touches the ground, it is out of play. Players must pass the balloon with their forks to their partners' forks. The partner then transfers the balloon to the basket at the finish line, touching the balloon with only the forks. Once the midway player returns to his line, the starting line player can pick up the next balloon. The team who gets the most balloons in their finish line basket wins.

    Neck Pass

    • Break the players into two teams, with a minimum of five players each. Each team has an assistant who helps them start the relay. Place a basket at least 10 feet away from the players at the end of the line. Set a time for the game, such as five minutes. On go, the team assistant passes a balloon to the first player in line who can only hold the balloon under his chin and against his chest. He must pass the balloon to the person next to him without touching it with any other body part. Once secured, the next player passes it on and so on, until it reaches the final person in line. If a balloon falls to the ground in the passing, the assistant will collect it and the team must start over. The last person runs to the basket, with the balloon tucked into his neck, to drop the balloon in the basket. If it falls outside the basket he can try to pick it up with his chin and neck. Throughout the game, only the team assistant can touch the balloon with any body part other than the chin, neck and chest. When the last player returns to the line, the assistant can hand the team another balloon. If a balloon pops, they must start over. The team with the most balloons in the basket at the end of the game wins.

    Waddle

    • Pair up all the participants and provide each with one balloon placed in the ground. At no time may any team member touch the balloon with his hands. Mark the starting line and the finish line, at least 20 feet apart, on the ground with masking tape. Both players of each team start at the starting line. On go, one player on the team must maneuver the balloon from the ground to between her knees with no help from her partner and without touching it with her hands. Once in place, the player waddles as quickly as possible to tag the finish line and returns to the starting line. Once she crosses the starting line, she drops the balloon for her partner to pick up, without his hands, between his knees. He must then waddle to the finish line and back. The first team to have both players cross the finish line and starting line wins. If a balloon pops, the team is disqualified. If a balloon falls in the progression to either line, the player must pick it up again and maneuver it between her knees, but she still cannot use her hands.
