Ideas of How to Make Lawn Chess Mats

Lawn chess allows players to see the game of chess from a new angle. Many outdoor chess sets are created as a permanent fixture in your yard with tile, strategic planting or a wood base. If this is not a possibility, or you simply want a portable set, make a lawn chess mat that you can store when not using. The supplies are inexpensive and accessible. You can create your own lawn chess mat in an afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the canvas on a flat and dry surface where it can stay undisturbed while paint dries. Artist canvas comes in different weights and materials. Look for a double-primed cotton canvas or primed floor cloth.

    • 2

Use a yardstick and pencil to measure eight rows and eight columns unto the canvas. Start by finding the center point. Find this by folding the canvas and marking the spot, or by measuring the canvas to determine the midpoint and the size of each of the 64 total squares.

    • 3

Use acrylic or latex paint to color the squares on the chessboard. Alternate colors on the board. Use the traditional black and white, red and black, or any combination of colors that you desire.

    • 4

Allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 5

Apply two coats of clear polyurethane. Once the front is dry, apply a layer of polyurethane to the back side.
