Kids' Icebreaker Games

When children are introduced to each other for the first time, they can often be shy and hesitant around each other. Icebreaker games are designed to involve all kids in a group and provide them with a way to learn information about each other in a fun and relaxing way.
  1. Throwing the Question

    • This game is played with a small ball. Ask the children to stand in a circle and throw the ball to one of them while asking a simple question such as their name, their favorite color, whether they have any pets or siblings and so on. The kid who catches the ball answers the question, then throws the ball to another kid while asking a question of his own. This game works best when it keeps moving quickly, not allowing the children time to hesitate.

    Fact Lists

    • Prepare name tags for each of the children. Give each kid a sheet of paper or small notebook and a pencil. When the game starts, children have a predetermined amount of time to walk around the room, asking simple questions to other children and writing down the answers on the paper. Once the time is up, gather the children together and compile lists of facts about each child, working from the answers the children collected. Once the lists are complete, read them aloud and allow them to ask each other more questions if they want to.

    People Bingo

    • Create several different bingo cards with various facts about the children, such as "has a pet cat," "is an only child," "likes the color blue" and so on, in the place of numbers. Distribute a card to each kid. The aim of the game is for the children to mingle and find other children matching the facts on their bingo card. The first kid with a completed card wins.

    Data Processing

    • The objective of this game is for groups of children to write down their names in an ordered list, arranging the list depending on a specific rule that you have given them, such as amount of siblings, alphabetically by favorite color or food, shoe size, birthday and so on. This game works better in small groups, unless the children have a lot of patience. If you divide a large group of children into smaller groups, play several rounds of this game and mix the groups every round to allow each child to get to know everybody else.
