Card Rules
Word Quest contains four types of cards, which can be used only for their specific purpose. Game space cards are color coordinated, and also have numbers that correlate to the numbered, colored board spaces. Word and definition containing cards contain three words, one from each difficulty level. Award cards are distributed for successful answers; they are also organized by color. All teams start out with 10 challenge cards, a player piece and the same number of colored, numbered space cards.
If some space cards are left over after equal distribution, players roll the dice to decide which team gets each extra card. Word-containing cards are left in holders and are drawn throughout the course of the game. If a team runs out of challenge cards and loses a challenge, they may give the successful team two novice level award cards or one intermediate level award card in place of the challenge card.
Game Movement Rules
Players move around the board by rolling the dice. Teams decide who goes first by each rolling the dice. Whichever team rolls the highest number goes first, and the next-highest goes second and so on. Whenever a team rolls doubles, they receive an immediate "bonus" roll. Only one bonus roll is awarded per turn. The game doesn't end when at the end of the spaces; as in Monopoly, the players continue to move around the board in a loop.
Point-Scoring Rules
Each board space has a color. This color indicates which word level difficulty to choose; for example, a green space means a player must use a green intermediate level card. If a player lands on a purple space, also known as a super word space, he can choose his own difficulty. Players score points whenever they guess a word's definition correctly or successfully challenge an opposing team's definition. Guesses are made by choosing one of the three definitions listed on the card.
Teams receive award cards for each correct answer; these award cards are also correlated to difficulty level and color. Players can get three award cards if they guess the right definition while on a purple space. If their team has the card matching the number on which their game piece landed, and they guess the correct definition, they can get two award cards.
Player Challenge Rules
While another team can't challenge a player's team if he has landed on a purple space or a space for which he has a game space card, the team can challenge if the player lands on a space for which he holds the card. The card-holding team can challenge a guess before the real answer is read. It then submits its own guess. If the challenging team is correct, it can take two challenge cards from the other team; if the playing team is correct, it take the challenging team's challenge card and also receive the award card from the definition.
Rules for Winning and Losing
After a team relinquishes all its challenge cards and, subsequently, award cards, that team loses. The team must drop out of game play and give away all its game space cards, dividing them up equally between the remaining teams. The other teams can roll for leftover cards after equal distribution. The team with the highest number of points, determined by the amount of award cards, wins. Usually, the game is continued until only two teams remain.
