How to Make a Paper Hand Guesser

Generations of kids have been folding paper into repositories of wisdom to gain advance information on their school and romantic lives. They call them fortune-tellers, chancers, chatterboxes, and perhaps most unfortunately, cootie-catchers. On the playground, they're often made of lined notebook paper, but today can be found ready-made or ready-to-print in elegant origami patterns or tied to children's TV programming.

Things You'll Need

  • Sheet of paper
  • Scissors
  • Pen, pencil, crayons or markers

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the paper into a square. For guidance, fold one corner up to meet the opposite side and crease from the opposite corner. Cut off the rectangle that shows beyond the triangle you've made.

    • 2

Fold again so the two ends of the crease come together and you form a smaller triangle. Open the paper back up to a square with two creases from corner to corner, crossing in the middle.

    • 3

Fold each corner of the square in to match to the crease lines in the center. Now you have a smaller square.

    • 4

Turn the square over and write a "fortune"---the name of an acquaintance, a travel destination, predictions of success---along each side of each of the crease lines running from the center to a corner of the square, eight fortunes in all.

    • 5

Fold each corner in to the center again, forming a still-smaller square.

    • 6

Write eight numbers, in any order, on the eight small triangles that make up the square.

    • 7

Fold the square crosswise both ways to form rectangles. Mark the eight triangles on the "flaps," if you wish, with letters, colors or names of acquaintances to be matched with those listed inside.

    • 8

Open just the last, smallest square and insert your thumbs and forefingers under the flaps; this will push the creases of the folded inside in so they meet in the middle and the creases of the flaps out to make room for your hands.

    • 9

Open the fortuneteller first at one cross fold and then at the other according to your magic formula for discerning its mysteries. When your subject finally chooses one of the numbered flaps, open it to read what the future holds.
