Birthday Games for Six-Year-Olds

Kids' birthday parties are supposed to be loaded with lots of fun, food and activities. Incorporating games into your child's birthday celebration is a great way to liven up the party and engage pint-size guests. Because the attention span of most six-year-olds is fairly short, plan on spending no longer than about 15 minutes on any one game.
  1. Scavenger Hunt

    • Scavenger Hunt can be played indoors or out. Simply hide 20 items around your house or yard before guests arrive. Divide the kids into teams, and give each team a list of the hidden items to find. The first team to find all 20 items wins the game. Items to hide can include bouncy balls, coins, party favors, erasers and pencils.

    Musical Chairs

    • Musical Chairs is a classic that never goes out of style. All you need is music and chairs. Place the chairs in a row, having one less chair than players. When the music starts, the kids must walk in a circle around the chair. When the music stops, everyone must scramble to find an empty seat. The one who doesn't is out. At the start of each new round, remove another chair. The last player seated wins the game.

    Water Balloon Dodge Ball

    • Fill balloons with water and divide players into two teams on opposites sides of a line. Give each team a supply of water balloons. Players must try to hit members of the opposite team with the water balloons. Whoever gets hit by a water balloon is out. The last child who is still (relatively) dry wins.

    Water Limbo

    • To play, an adult holds a garden hose and points a stream of water for kids to shimmy under. To begin, hold the stream at the height of the tallest child playing. While music is playing, the children must walk or dance under the water without touching it. Whoever touches the water or falls is out of the game. After each round, lower the stream until only one survivor is left.

    Bubble Gum Blowout

    • A spin on bobbing for apples, this game can be a bit messy. Place a a piece of bubble gum on a plate and a scoop of ice cream on top of it. Without using their hands, the kids must eat the ice cream until they uncover the bubble gum. The first player to find the bubble gum and blow a bubble wins.
